Tips for Facing an Interview

Body language:
The body language plays a very important role in an interview. This implies that when one makes any positive statements, those movements should be supported by his/her body language. When entering the interview room, one should not have a tough look and a smile with tension in mind. Even the way one enters the room and sits is noticed. Actually one should enter with a calm smile on face and a stiff body posture which shows that he/she is not nervous at all and has a positive friendly attitude. This makes the interviewer also to feel open and become friendly at the first sight which in return increases one’s chances to get through the interview.

Punctuality:
It is very important to be on time for an interview. Instead, one should reach an hour early which is much better than arriving a few minutes late and will put a bad impression on the interviewrs. Also, if one reaches early, he/she gets enough time to relax your mind, put all the scattered thoughts in the mind together, get used to the environment and lessen the nervousness. Moreover, it gives time to one to have a final check on yourself.

Greet the Interviewers:
‘The first impression is the last impression” is one of the oldest and important idiom used by us. As and when one enters the room for interview, everybody looks at his/her personality, facial expressions and that is the time when the interviewer has the first impression about you. Therefore, one should greet the interviewers by taking his/her last name and if one does not know their names, one should first check it on the reception before going in the interview room.

Handshake:
I know that most of us do not consider or are unknown that the way you shake hands with the interviewer also plays a very important part in an interview. To form a positive impression one should do a firm handshake, which shows his/her confidence level. Also, when one is shaking hands, one should make eye contact with the person he/she is shaking hands with.
If one gives a weak handshake that shows that he/she is weak and not confident enough to take up the responsibilities at work. Also, if the handshake is too hard and by chance it hurts the interviewer a little, it puts an impression that he/she is Dominant.
One should shake hands for 3-5 seconds maximum.

Maintain Eye contact:
One should try to make an eye contact with the interviewer especially when you are having any conversation with the interviewer. If one tries to avoid the eye contact, this makes the interviewer believe that there is something fishy and he/she is hiding something. Hence, that gives them an impression that the interviewee is unfaithful or untrustworthy.
Therefore, one should be confidently talking with the interviewer with proper eye contact. But that does not at all mean that one should stare at the interviewer.

Way you Sit:
I understand that it sounds a little different but yes the way one sits in the interview room and when do you sit also shows your many things about your personality.
One should not sit immediately after entering the interview room but wait for the interviewer to offer him/her a seat. If not offered a seat by the interviewer, one should take permission to take a seat. This is because if one sits without being offered or without asking, that makes the interviewer perceive that he/she is arrogant, over-confident, nervous, etc. which can act against you in the interview.

Talk Precisely:
One should be precise on what he/she is talking as the rule says that the interviewee should talk 1/3rd of the time. One should let the interviewer talk at the beginning about what are the requirements, about the company details, what job profile are they looking for, how they want their employees to be in the organization, etc. One should always keep in mind that when the interviewer is doing the above talk, he/she should not at all be giving a negative message by their body language instead he/she should have a positive body language towards whatever the interviewer explains and it is much more beneficial for the interviewee to ask questions to show that he/she is quite interested to know more about the organization. It is much better than only speaking about yourself continuously.

Be Confident at the End:
At the end of the interview also, one should be energetic and should have a firm and energetic handshake before leaving the interview room. One should also thank the interviewer as well at the same time while shaking hands before leaving in the same way as done when entered the room athis gives an impression that you are friendly and also leaves a good impression on the interviewers. One should not get up from the seat and show hurry in leaving the room at the end. Instead, he/she should wait for the interviewer to show that it is over now.
Even if one thinks that the interview did not go well and he/she is sure that he/she may get rejected 99.9% , still one should never let them get the impression that he/she is discouraged sthe reaction.

Thanking:
One of the most essential part is thanking the interviewer at the end for their time and also sending a small ‘thank you’ mail after leaving the same day. In this mail one can write precisely the important parts of the conversation at the time of interview and again emphasize on your skills which can bring benefits to the organization and the position you have applied for.

Honesty is the BEST policy in Business Too

After counseling students for more than 3 years now, I believe that it is always profitable to be honest for maintaining a long term growth in the business.
One may get a very good business by not being transparent about a product/service for a short period, but it hits the business if one aims at a long term and continuous growth in business.
It is extremely important to sell your product in the best possible manner so that more and more people buy it, but at the same time it is extremely important that you do not over estimate your product because this will bring disappointment to the customer which will do a negative marketing of the product/service automatically.
One should try and come up with the best product with best qualities and then sell it honestly without making any false promises which can never be fulfilled.
Honesty = Long Term Growth in Business

Do you think you can predict ?

I was going through data mining sites and came across this particular site : Kaggle

It is a platform for data prediction competitions that allows organizations to post their data and have it scrutinized by the world’s best data scientists.

I feel this is one awesome way to make your mind work and earn some dollars through statistics.

How it works?

There are 3 steps to it :

  • Upload

  • Evaluate and Exchange

Just register yourself and let some statistics earn some dollars.

Segmentation – at our roadside!

I was walking down the road after finishing my shopping from Westside and I stopped on the pavement to talk to my mom. A daughter-mom conversation typically takes more than 5 mins where the topics revolve anything from neighbours’ current status to the nosy relatives. And we were having one such conversation. And as I was talking over the phone, I happened to notice a beggar, who should be around 10-12 years of old, who made close to Rs.10/- in the first 2 mins of my conversation.

Then I could not but help recognize the pattern in the way she approached people. The girl approached only people with the following characteristics:

- Single men/women – when I say single, I do not mean unmarried but those that were by themselves – that were 20-32 years old

- All phirangs

- Those that did not travel on cars but were on foot

- Those that did not look like Delhities

And believe me or not, she was able to tap the best market by just concentrating on these segments. I was amazed that the girl who with no formal education was able to segment the market in the best way. And I, had to spend close to 2 years in a different land spending 30 lakhs to understand the concept of Segmentation!!

How many times have we questioned ourselves if the target segment chosen by us is the right? Well, in that case – determining the characteristics of the customers that they have and accordingly clustering it would do the charm.

Why did the girl choose this cluster?? More on this on the next blog…

Can a Model for Intuition be built?

Going through all the possibilities of where Analytics could be applied was very interesting. Analytics could be applied in the field of sports, marketing, sales, retail, clinical, architecture, internet and the list can go on. I have come up with a very vague model  to define intution. I call this the modeling of gut or rather Modeling Intuition.

My younger brothers were preparing for JEE Exams and they had to practice answering loads of Multiple Choice Question’s(MCQ’s).That’s where the idea of this analytics model was born. I asked them to answer the paper 3 times.

  • The first time I asked them to answer the MCQ’s with proper solutions to the Questions, this would be the second variable, first variable being the question’s grouped in each subject(Math, Physics, Chemistry)
  • The second time I asked them to just answer the question’s with their intuition without actually using the pen and paper to solve the questions’s. this would dd as the 3rd variable.
  • The 3rd time I asked them to the solve the MCQ’s is a short span of time, which would be the 4th variable.
  • The correct answers would the 5th variable.

Modeling IntuitionAs of now these are the variables that I store. With simple analysis we could say that whether they would score above 70% intuitively or not, what would be the best practice that has to be followed using your intuition(we can confirm this with if one has constantly scored above 70% in at least in 50 MCQ papers). Another case we could measure is what percentage he has failed using intuition and how should he be acting . Obviously this is not a fool proof model and many other variables and factors should go in before we can actually start building a confidant model on Intuition.

Modeling Intuition

The first question that immediately props up is : “What is DoE?” . Well, the term may look fancy but it stands of Design of Experiment. Wikipedia may give a big gyaan on “How to model design of experiments” but let me tellyou something – you are already doing it without knowing.

Now, lets traverse through time a little. (Note: am talking about the time when there were only two channels on TV, Rajinikanth was paired with heroines of his age and the term ‘social media marketing’ was yet to be coined)

Analytics used by school girls to maximise marks

School Kid

When I was a kid, I used to appear to all my exams with a specific pencil (but not use it), start from home at 8:00 am and travel slowly – take about 25-30 minutes (when the exam was at 9:00 am and it takes less than 15 mins for me to travel), pass through a specific temple (well, I was god-fearing then), wear a blue coloured handkerchief (those were the days when tissue-papers were not known and mom used to pin a handkerchief to my shirt) and give exams. Well, the variables chosen by me may be dumb – but it worked! IT WORKED EVERY SINGLE TIME. Whenever I did not follow any of these or a combination of these, my marks have always gone down!

Coming to the analytics part, the dependent variable in this case is the marks scored and the independent variables are all the above ones in addition to the number of hours I studied. Now, design of experiments states that : a) Determine what is your end goal. In this case, to maximise marks with very less time spent on exams AND  b) Determine what are the dependent variables.

So, the formula in this case would be : Max marks = x * (# of hours studied) + y * (colour of handkerchief) + z * ( # of pencils carried) + a * ( # of minutes spent on travel)

I have tried changing every single time in changing one of the variables and seen what is the optimal # of hours that have to be spent on studying, what is average number of minutes I should spend on travel and how many pencils should I carry to maximise my marks.

So, now, I can give a formula to my success! :) Isnt analytics awesome?

TYTW- Smart Phones

First there was web analytics

Then there was Mobile Analytics

And now, for those who are noticing, there is mobile web analytics.

If you have been following our Facebook or Twitter feeds you will notice that this is one trend we are closely tracking.   Smart Phones – be they the ubiquitous Blackberry, I Phone or an Android- completely change the ways human consume information. Whether it is in simple steps such as checking the price of a products on a price comparator while at the grocery store, or creating detailed personal data diaries of different activities – such as how long a person walks per day, or how many calories she consume, Smart Phones has made the most ordinary of people data fiends.

For an analysts this means a much greater ability to capture personal and web data and build predictive models that -literally- help people lead better lives.

-Simple apps that ping the moment you have crossed your recommended daily allowance of calories based on a back-end analytical engine

- A predictive model that correlates time spent outdoors with overall health and well being

- Association rules that help retailers aggregate data and tell them what kinds of stores people visit together helping mall owners with more efficient and profitable layouts

- A data visualization app that helps you compare your necessary expenditure against frivolous spends

All of these become a distinct possibility at the cross roads of mobile and web analytics, and this is why smart phones are No.2 in our list of analytical trends for the year
